TESTIMONIALS
"I cannot believe how much my daughter changed after only six months at the Herbert House! She is enthusiastic about life, serious about her sobriety, and is clearly making healthier choices in her lifestyle, priorities and associations."
Dr. Marilyn Sherman, mother of a former resident.

"I always think of Herbert House when I have a client who needs a sober living. Not only is there structure built into the program, but the community itself engenders accountability, motivation and connection. I know that I will be consulted in the event of any issue that arises with my client, and therefore I feel more assured that he/she is receiving a proper continuity of care."

RESIDENT PROFILES
Meet Kevin, Age 20
Hometown: Dallas, Texas.
Sober Passions: Bodybuilding, Loading music on my IPod, making my friends laugh.
Career Interests: Currently going to school to become a sound engineer.
Got to Sober Living by Way of: Intervention by family, then to Cirque Lodge in Sundance, Utah, with a recommended transition to Herbert House.
Biggest Challenge in Sobriety: Living so far from home and my family and friends in Texas. Even though I have my own apartment now, I still come to the Herbert House to visit Jace and Danny and talk with the new people.
What I Loved Most About the Herbert House: I met a lot of really cool young people who are sober and having fun. Danny (the house manager) taught me what to do when cravings to drink or use come up.

Meet Wendy, “40-ish”
Hometown: Thousand Oaks, California.
Sober Passions: Involvement in my daughter’s school, oil painting, cooking, pilates.
Career Interests: Buying and selling real estate.
Got to Sober Living by Way of: Detox in Los Angeles after my husband and daughter said they needed for me to stop drinking.
Biggest Challenge in Sobriety: Making lasting amends to my family, managing my feelings after drinking for so many years, balancing family life, work life and recovery commitments.
What I Loved Most About the Herbert House: They created a program for my individual recovery needs. I came back into my family slowly, starting with family therapy and visits, then weekend passes, then a transition into my home using my new support network. My entire family is so much happier now!

Meet Max, Age 25
Hometown: Racine, Wisconsin
Sober Passions: I am restoring a vintage RV for a cross-country trip, and I write a daily blog about fishing.
Career Interests: I work full-time on a presidential campaign. Eventually, I would like to go to law school.
Got to Sober Living by Way of: I dropped out of college in Chicago and went to inpatient treatment at a Malibu treatment center, where they recommended that I go to Herbert House.
Biggest Challenge in Sobriety: I have a hard time prioritizing my time, because there are so many things I want to do now that I am sober. Everyone tells me I need to slow down.
What I Loved Most About the Herbert House: I graduated from college while living at the Herbert House! They understood that I had to study, attend classes, go to meetings and therapy, and they encouraged me the whole way and even threw a graduation party for me.

Meet Elizabeth, Age 35
Hometown: New York, New York.
Sober Passions: surfing (just learning!), devouring books, spending time with friends over coffee or a delicious meal.
Career Interests: I aspire to teach at a University; recently accepted to a master’s program at UCLA.
Got to Sober Living by Way of: I was arrested for drugs at a music festival in Austin, Texas, then court-ordered to treatment in North Hollywood. I chose sober living because I knew I was not yet ready to live on my own without the continuous support of a recovery community.
Biggest Challenge in Sobriety: Getting to know myself and what my true strengths and weaknesses are.
What I Loved Most About the Herbert House: I felt respected and supported by the staff, and encouraged to dream big, work hard, and risk trying new healthy activities. Even now, I return to the Herbert House from time to time if I am in need of extra support and encouragement, or to connect with other alumni.

Meet Ashley, Age 19
Hometown: Mendocino, California.
Sober Passions: Designing and sewing my own clothes, making jewelry.
Career Interests: I would like to work on a movie set as a Wardrobe Consultant.
Got to Sober Living by Way of: being suspended from school and sent to treatment and then entering outpatient in West Los Angeles. My therapist recommended Herbert House, and my parents checked it out for me.
Biggest Challenge in Sobriety: I still procrastinate sometimes, and I have a hard time sticking to my new budget.
What I Loved Most About the Herbert House: They never gave up on me even though it was hard for me to get it together. Everyone in the house cared about me. I completed my outpatient program, got my GED, got a sponsor and a commitment at a meeting, and I even learned to get up at a reasonable hour – all in 6 months!
